What Do You Need?

Philippians 4:6 VOICE – Don’t be anxious about things; instead, pray. Pray about everything. He longs to hear your requests, so talk to God about your needs and be thankful for what has come.

06950025When we get anxious and worried about stuff in our lives, how soon do we pray? Perhaps things seem as murky as this underwater photo, and it’s hard to see anything good or hopeful.  Sometimes we’ll even call a friend or professional acquaintance before we call on God. We will open our Bibles, maybe, or a notepad, and hunt for a verse or a thought that will ease our worries. We may even talk at God – you know, not really praying, but complaining or moaning – neither of which is conducive to praying, listening to God.

Needs are real, as are miracles, forgiveness, thanksgivings, praises, and trash. “Pray about everything”? Yes, God wants us to know Him well enough to know that He wants to hear who we believe we are. And who we are is evident when we talk, or think, or act…and with whom we do those three things.

We’re safe not to worry – and besides, Jesus told us not to (Matthew 6:31). You are safe because God provides everything we need. We may be talking to Him about what we believe we need, and He’s already working out the best for us. Know that everything we have, all that we are, everything that’s coming is by His hand – a gift to grow us into the image of His Son.

We can remember to say, “Thank You, God, for bringing me _________,” whatever it is, even before we see it. Thank Him that He gave us His very best in Jesus, and we are now in eternal life. Thank Him that His plans are perfect. Thank Him for His loving kindness that led us to repentance last week. Thank Him for the forgiveness He is teaching us for every person. Thank God for teaching us spiritual warfare against an enemy that’s already defeated. Thank Him for that encounter yesterday with the person who needed what we have: Jesus Christ, Savior and Lord! Thank Almighty God for what He’s doing and what He’s going to do. We can be thank-full!
